The Body of Our Poetry is a 4-week poetry class with writing prompts, discussion sessions, and time to share work. This class is valuable to writers of all forms of creative writing (not just poetry). Each week, we’ll focus on a new topic:
Foundations: The Elements of Poetry
A Deeper Dive: Poetic Terminology
Say It Different: Developing Your Poetic Voice
Editing Is Your Friend: Getting To The Meat of it All
SAY iT DiFFERENTLY: DEVELOPING YOUR POETiC VOiCE
Poetry is characterized by its language, and part of that are the words we choose. If your poetry is full of generic/basic terms and cliches, you stand to turn your reader off and lose your audience. In poetry, we give our readers experience. We show, not tell.
How can we offer our reader a deeper experience with the words we use? How can we venture out of our daily lexicon to say it differently? And why would we want to? As a creative writer, your word choice sets you apart from the sea of writers that’s out there and helps to develop your “poetic voice.”
In this third session, we’ll deepen our understanding and demonstrate the learning by way of engaging in two writing prompts, utilizing the form of poetry called Acrostic. Let’s find ways to say it differently.
