Learning and Breaking the Rules: a crash-course in fiction (session 4)

all times in Pacific
all sessions on Zoom

We hear a lot of rules about writing. "Show, don't tell," "write what you know," and all that jazz. But what rules actually matter, if any? The goal of this generative workshop is for writers of any experience level to ask these questions, to experiment and take risks, and to lean into the aspect of play in their craft. Along with guided writing prompts, we'll be exploring topics like: "Can tropes and clichés actually be good?" and "What do collaborative-storytelling games like Dungeons & Dragons teach us about character development?" We'll also go over excerpts from craft essays, short stories, and novels in order to come to our own conclusions in group discussion. There's no one way to tell a story, so don't sweat the small stuff and have fun on the page!

Taught by Carleton Whaley.
