Contemporary Chekhov (part 2)

In this two-part workshop, taught by Kate Rebecca Schwartz, we’ll take a deep dive into two contemporary adaptations of Anton Chekhov’s works.

First, we’ll read and discuss Annie Baker’s Uncle Vanya where contemporary language meets Chekhov's story of human relationships and longing. Then we’ll examine Brian Friel’s one-act Afterplay where Vanya's now-grown niece Sonya has an encounter at a Moscow cafe.

In these connected workshops, we’ll look at the structures, themes, character arcs, and moments that “pop” in these two plays. We’ll read sections of the plays aloud and learn more about the backgrounds Chekhov and his adaptors Annie Baker and Brian Friel.

Two parts, both 1-3:30 pm PT (4-6:30 pm ET):

  1. Sun Sep 19

  2. Sun Sep 26

You may attend one or both workshops. Please write which date/s you’re attending on the sign-up form.
