The Game: Using Improvisation Rules in Writing

In this workshop, we'll discuss some of the ways you can keep your readers guessing and entertained. How do you make good on what your first page promises, then take your story to new heights? Well, we'll use improv ideas like the ole "Yes, and" gag in order to highlight some of the things I love about writing and reading speculative fiction. And of course, we'll talk about some of the ways you can up the game of your own writing!

Taught by Sam Rebelein who got his creative start in comedy (sketch and improv), but over the last few years, his focus has been on speculative fiction (sci-fi, fantasy, horror, etc.). His comedy roots have informed the way he thinks about genre and how writers can/should keep their readers engaged. In improv, every scene has a "game," something that the actors play together. In writing, your reader is the one collaborating with you in your game. So how do you make your game fun and challenging? What do we even MEAN by game??

No improv or acting experience necessary, but come ready to write a little!
