Modern Horror Book Club (session 5)

all times in Pacific
all sessions on Zoom

If you're looking to explore some of the work being written in the horror genre today, whether you're a horror writer yourself, an avid reader of horror, or just, like, a really big fan of Midnight Mass, this book club is for you! We’re not talkin’ classics like King, Lovecraft, and Shirley Jackson (although I do love Hill House). No, we’re talkin’ contemporary legends: people who are writing now about the horrors we are facing today. This book club is a celebration of diverse voices in horror and independent publishing, and the group is open to any and all who want to participate.

We’ll meet for 90 minutes every 3 three weeks to discuss one short book. Life’s busy, y'all, and the selections for this group respect that. The longest book we'll be reading is barely 200 pages. All you have to prep for each session is read the book and come ready to discuss!

  • 10/30: You've Lost a Lot of Blood by Eric LaRocca

  • 11/20: Goddess of Filth by V. Castro

  • 12/11: The Worm and His Kings by Hailey Piper

  • 1/08/23: How to Recognize A Demon Has Become Your Friend by Linda Addison

  • 1/29/23: Twentieth Anniversary Screening by Jeff Strand

We will be discussing specific craft elements in each of these books (use of dialogue, imagery, plotting, etc.), but the aim is to look at what makes these stories enjoyable and effectively spooky.

Led by Sam Rebelein.
