In this lab, we’ll dive deep into those elements that make a poem a poem and the figures of speech that set poetry apart from prose writing.
Metaphors and similes are ways to see the familiar, evoke imagery, and make poems more memorable. Personification brings powerful imagery and places human attributes to inanimate objects or ideals, facilitating connection and personal investment in the world of the poem.
We’ll look at two different classic poems connected by these figures of speech: Emily Dickinson’s “Hope is the thing with feathers” and Maya Angelou’s “Still I Rise.” There will also be writing prompts to deepen our learning and time to share and discuss our work.
