Writing the Uncanny (session 6)

all times in Pacific
all labs on Zoom

Each session of this 6-week class is devoted to learning about an aspect of the uncanny through literary and pop culture references. Over the course of the class, we’ll touch on the writings of Sigmund Freud, Julia Kristeva, Shirley Jackson, Stephen King, Jeff VanderMeer, Henry James, Edgar Allan Poe, Margaret Atwood, and the Bronte sisters; films by Jordan Peele and Alfred Hitchcock; and TV shows like True Detective and Hannibal. We’ll also look at the uncanny in fairy tales and mythology.

Reading and discussion periods will be followed by writing time for both guided prompts and individual work. There will also be opportunities to share and discuss our work with the group.

Students should have access to Google Drive to view class materials and upload work.

Taught by Astra Pierson.
