Impossible Grief: Finding Words for the Ineffable Experience of Loss (session 1)

all times in Pacific
all labs on Zoom

Alice Walker wrote: "It does not matter to me / Wherever you are grieving / Whether Paris, Damascus, Jerusalem, Bamako, / Mexico or Beirut or New York City / My heart, too, is bruised/ and dragging." (Wherever You are Grieving)

Join us in this class dedicated to exploring what it means to give flesh to the ghost of our grief through creative writing. In this 4-session class, we will approach our grieving hearts with tenderness and curiosity. We will study the revolutionary work of authors like Alice Walker, Victoria Chang, Kate Zambreno, Ursula K. LeGuin, and others as they write about their grief. We also will investigate loss through the lens of ancient mythology.

Be prepared to write in class and to share your work with others, with the expectation of supportive feedback and active listening. The ultimate goal of this course is to bring more self expression, truth, and creativity into our lives and our grieving process.

This class follows last spring's Grief Magic: Exploring and Transforming Loss Through Writing. You do not have to have participated in that class to attend, but we may send you materials beforehand to catch you up. Writers of all genres are welcome.

Led by Sarah Mae Afriam

4 sessions, all from 1:00 - 3:00 pm PDT: Sat 3/11, Sat 3/25, Sat 4/1, Sat 4/15
You must be enrolled for the first session to attend the full class.
